A taste of South Sardinia
8 days / 7 nights in Bed & Breakfast, half board, 6 excursions, airport/harbour transfers
First Day We'll visit Cagliari, Sardinia's most important city. Strolling about the narrow streets of Castello, the Medieval quarter, we'll see the fourteenth-century Pisan towers and visit Santa Maria's Cathedral. From the top of the old bastions, we'll admire the breathtaking view of the city and its gulf. We'll then go on to Nora where we'll visit the Phoenician, Punic and Roman ruins.
Second Day We'll cross Campidano plain to reach Barumini Nuragical complex Su Nuraxi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visiting the Nuraghe, we'll go for a pleasant walk through the Giara upland, where we'll be fascinated by the scented bushes, the cork trees and the paulis , small lakes which make a perfect habitat for the small wild horses the Giara is well-known for. Then we'll drive to Tuili where we'll taste Pecorino cheese, Nuragus wine and Mirto liqueur.
Third Day Historical and Environmental Geo-mining Park in Sulcis-Iglesiente area. We'll visit Montevecchio and San Giovanni mining complex, with its beautiful grotto whose dark-brown tabular crystals of Baryte are unique in the world. We'll then drive along the old path to Nebida which leads to one of the most wonderful panoramas in Sardinia. We'll then go to see the highest sand dunes in Sardinia: Piscinas dunes up to 60 meter high.
Fourth Day Sant'Antioco Island. We'll meet the only master who still keeps the knowledge and technique of an very old tradition which traces back to Ancient Egypt: the weaving of byssus (or seasilk). We'll then visit Sant'Antioco's Church (V cent.) and the Catacombs (III cent.). Walking around we'll see the wide Phoenician-Punic necropolis and the Tophet. On the way back to Cagliari we'll stop to visit the houses of fairies, a striking amphitheatre of Neolitic tombs dig in the rock.
